Redskins 2007 Depth Chart: Midseason Update

Not the same place we started at

It's midseason, eight games into a sixteen game season so let's have a look at the revised depth chart. As usual this comes with the disclaimer that my thoughts may differ from any official pronouncements, your thoughts welcome in comments.

Original Curly R depth chart here. Team official depth chart here, washingtonpost.com depth chart here, nfl.com depth chart here.

Quarterback
1. Jason Campbell
2. Mark Brunell
3. Todd Collins

Notes: Has anyone with a QB number taken a snap besides Jason? He's the guy, no changes here. Solid.

Tailback
1. Clinton Portis
2. Ladell Betts
3. Rock Cartwright (mainly returns)
4. Marcus Mason (cut 9/11, signed to practice squad 9/13/07)

Notes: No real changes here, Rock is hurt but is not a real option anyway and Marcus went from inactive on the roster to the practice squad. Production has not been great. If you go back and read my original notes on this position I did not think Clinton was in game shape and would not get 25 carries off the bat. Notwithstanding the 196 yard performance against the Jets he has not and the position is suffering. Needs improvement.

Fullback / H-back
1. Mike Sellers

Notes: Mike has gotten more carries and is catching passes, he is a load and no problems here. Solid.

Receiver
1. Santana Moss
2. Antwaan Randle El
3. Keenan McCardell (signed 10/1/07)
4. James Thrash
5. 3. Brandon Lloyd*
6. Reche Caldwell (signed 9/11/07)
7. 5. Shaun Bodiford (cut 9/20, signed to practice squad 9/23/07)

Notes: A group struggling. After getting off to a wild start things have quieted, Santana has had a flareup of the recurring groin, Anwtaan has dropped off with a hamstring and that's basically it. Keenan and Reche have not been bad ideas in that there simply are not enough balls to go around. *Brandon Lloyd was inactive for the Jets game but Joe Gibbs says his time is not over so make of that what you will. Needs improvement.

Tight end
1. Chris Cooley
2. Todd Yoder
3. Cody Boyd (cut 10/21, signed to practice squad 10/23/07)

Notes: Chris signed his big deal right at the start of the season so he will be around a while, the offensive line struggles have held his catches down as he is required to stay back and block. Needs improvement.

Offensive line
Left tackle
1. Chris Samuels
2. Todd Wade
2. 3. Stephon Heyer

Notes: With right tackle Jon Jansen going down in the first game against Miami Todd Wade has moved permanently to that position. Stephon Heyer is elevated to number two. Chris has been the stalwart on the line. Solid.

Left guard
1. Pete Kendall
2. Mike Pucillo
3. Todd Wade
3. Rick DeMulling (signed 9/20/07)

Notes: Again with Jon's injury Todd has moved to RT permanently. Mike Pucillo is also the backup center so that position affects this one. Pete has played well. Solid.

Center
1. Casey Rabach
2. Mike Pucillo

Notes: Casey Rabach aka Casey Nutsach got hurt in the Packers game and Mike Pucillo played the entire Cardinals game and was not terrible. It did make me miss Casey Nutsach though. Generally solid.

Right guard
1. Randy Thomas
1. 2. Jason Fabini
2. Rick DeMulling (signed 9/20/07)

Notes: Randy tore his left triceps in game two against the Eagles but was not put on IR. Jason Fabini has become the permanent RT until further notice and the guy off the street backs him up. Nervous laughter.

Right tackle
1. Jon Jansen
1. 2/3. Todd Wade
2/3. Jason Fabini
2. Stephon Heyer

Notes: Jon dislocated and broke his ankle in game one against the Dolphins and Stephon Heyer was forced to play RT from scratch, Todd being inactive due to a lingering preseason shoulder injury. He held it together and now backs up Todd, both have had lingering leg injuries. The Mike Vrabel Massacre came from the right side. Nervous laughter.

Kevin Sampson is in there somehwere and defensive tackle Lorenzo Alexander aka Scarface is also listed as an emergency offensive lineman.

Defensive line
Left defensive end
1. Phillip Daniels
2/3. Demetric Evans
2/3. Chris Wilson

Notes: Demetric has been Phillip's backup, even starting game two against the Eagles (op. cit.) when Phillip's foot was hurting. Solid.

Left defensive tackle
1. Cornelius Griffin
2/3. Anthony Montgomery
2. 4. Lorenzo Alexander aka Scarface
3. 2/3. Ryan Boschetti

Notes: As predicted in the original notes, if Lorenzo had the chops he would pass Ryan and he has. Anthony has become the other starting tackle. Solid.

Right defensive tackle
1. 2/3. Anthony Montgomery
2. 1. Kedric Golston
3. 2/3. Ryan Boschetti
4. Lorenzo Alexander aka Scarface

Notes: Anthony supplanted Kedric by game five against the Packers (op. cit.) if not earlier and even though Lorenzo may line up a play here and there at RDT he plays mainly on the left. Solid.

Right defensive end
1. Andre Carter
2/3. Demetric Evans
2. 2/3. Chris Wilson

Notes: Andre has been excellent rushing the passer and Chris has a first step not unlike Andre's. Solid.

Linebacker
Weakside linebacker
1. Rocky McIntosh
2. Khary Campbell

Notes: Rocky has played well and we have seen little of Khary, Rocky keeps pinching nerves, jamming necks and he just doesn't stop. Solid.

Middle linebacker
1. London Fletcher
2. HB Blades
3. Khary Campbell

Notes: As predicted by his career London has played most every snap, he never missed a play and true to form is leading the team in tackles by a wide margin. HB has only been in for spot duty. Khary will only appear here in the case of severe injury. Solid.

Strongside linebacker
1. Marcus Washington
2. Randall Godfrey
3. Khary Campbell

Notes: Marcus has already been out with the dislocated elbow (ouch!) suffered in the preseason and back and out again with a hamstring, he missed the Packers game and the Cardinals game, was back and then missed the Jets game. This is the touchiest linebacker spot. Needs improvement.

Cornerback
1. Shawn Springs
2. Carlos Rogers
2. 3. Fred Smoot
3. 5. Leigh Torrence
4. David Macklin
5. John Eubanks aka Bob Eubanks (promoted from practice squad 10/30/07)

Carlos suffered season ending knee injuries in game seven at New England. Loveboat Freddie is recovering slowwwwwwwly from a hamstring injury and is now number two. Everybody moves up, Bob Eubanks comes from the practice squad and Byron Westbrook is the next reserve. There is risk this unit will drop in performance. Nervous laughter.

Safety
Free safety
1. Sean Taylor
2/3. Pierson Prioleau
2/3. Reed Doughty

Notes: This unit is playing well, Pierson is playing more of a strong safety position, Sean is not taking many plays off. Solid.

Strong safety
1. LaRon Landry
2. Pierson Prioleau
3. Vernon Fox

No sign of LaRon tiring. Solid.

Special teams
Kicker
Shaun Suisham. Notes: Nice to have a good kicker. Solid.

Punter
Derrick Frost. Notes: He can kick the hell out of it. Solid.

Returns
Kickoffs
Rock Cartwright, Ladell Betts. Notes: Rock was hurt on an 80 yard kickoff return in game six against the Cardinals. Ladell has been filling in and the job will be Rock's when he gets back. Generally solid.

Punts

Antwaan Randle El. Notes: he is a little dinged with a hamstring but is doing well returning punts. Solid.

Long snapper
Ethan Albright. Notes: he's been with the team like 100 years. Solid. Whatever. I guess.
