The Redskins' Future: Now AND Later - Part Five

Smack it up, smack it down

A starting member of the Redskins cornerback corps suffers a serious injury, one that brings into question his ability to be ready for the season opener. It doesn't help that this player has so far not lived up to his first round pick status. Enter Fred Smoot's Fred Smoot. Curly R's series on the Redskins changing draft philosophy continues.

Part One: Draft Picks Are Free But Not Without Cost

Part Seven: Round Seven and Wrap Up

Round Four
Justin Tryon, CB

The future is bright with the possibility of play now The sudden wealth, albeit also inexperiencedness, of the Redskins at safety tends to indicate to me that Shawn Springs will not as was rumored in April play safety (see also Will at Hogs Haven for wider implications of moving Shawn Springs to safety). Shawn will return as the team's top cornerback and with Carlos Rogers coming back from a gruesome injury, Fred Smoot will be number two. On the roster now that leaves Leigh Torrence and Byron Westbrook as the guys with team experience.

In one scenario Carlos can come back relatively soon and the 1-2 combination of Shawn and Fred only has to hang on a couple of games, assuming that Fred is not yet the better corner over Carlos. In the other scenario Carlos is going to be out a while, Shawn and Fred settle in for the indefinite future as starters and we take it from there.

In any event we should know soon into training camp if Justin has what it takes to displace either Byron or Leigh and move into that third spot where he will see lots of playing time, or whether he sits and learns.

Bottom line: with Tony Romo (lol), Donovan McNabb and Eli Manning on the prowl in the NFC Beast this player represents a solid pick at the position for later, and possibly now.

The Redskins' Future: Now AND Later continues tomorrow with part six, Round Six.
