One Play Drive

With apologies to Chris Horton

Takeaway drill: Redskins play tough, stick to their game plan, hang around. Clinton Portis runs tough, sees daylight, Saints ground game held in check. The rookie safety makes the best of his opportunity. The new coach gets his first win in dramatic fashion.

Monday walkthrough: Washington Redskins play tough on a hot day, hang on, score 14 unanswered points to beat the visiting New Orleans Saints 29-24 to move to 1-1.

Soapbox: a fun game to watch, somewhat stressful to watch the team start the game able to go down the field and get held to field goals all three times. Jason Campbell had a great day statistically, Santana Moss was in full Santana mode with the short catches and YAC in traffic as well as long routes one of which won the game. The run defense was sublime (op. cit.).

Some things to think about as re: Redskins offense, long passes that connected, an end to end drive to stay in the game, a crucial fourth down play to seal the deal. Washington had one opportunity to showcase clock management, last possession of the first half Redskins got the ball back with 3:18 left and no timeouts. Although the drive yielded only three points it was well managed and featured New Orleans taking two timeouts for being out of position.

And as re: Redskins defense, lots of points given up; most of it resulting through the air. That the defensive starters were introduced individually today means this team realizes competitiveness will really be measured by the defense.

The special teams really sucked today. Durant Brooks botched a snap that was right at his body, he still should have gotten it and he was poor at punting; Antwaan Randle El fumbled a punt that led to the Saints first score to take the lead.

Today's Redskins offense looked a lot like other Redskins offenses we have seen lately. The invisible hand is in play.

Chattering class: Mike Wise at the Washington Post with a true paean to the life of an NFL quarterback.

Jason La Canfora also at the WaPo, wearing his columnist hat, writes that when the passing game could not carry the team, well the running game was there.

Tom Boswell at the WaPo writes about what a great game to have by Jim Zorn and Jason Campbell at this time in this situation by this team.

Les Carpenter has the obligatory front page A1 piece on the joy of the Redskins' and Jim Zorn's first wins, for one of the season, for the other ever. It is sandwiched between the stories of 156 year old Lehman Brothers declaring bankruptcy in the total US financial meltdown and how despite the lofty rhetoric the presidential electoral map will probably look very familiar.

=====

Omnibus: London Fletcher played his 121st consecutive game today, he is now second among defensive players behind Derrick Brooks who started his 193rd consecutive game today.

Marcus Washington did not play with the hip and the hamstring. I am not encouraged by his availability for the long season. HB Blades started and finished with four tackles and two assists and was a factor in the Redskins' strong run defense.

Chris Horton is coming on strong. Strong safety Reed Doughty was out of the game with a stomach virus and Chris, who had the benefit of playing in a very Redskins style defense at USC under former Redskins cornerbacks coach DeWayne Walker just slammed it. Whether it is his familiarity with the defense or his nose for the play, the dude was everywhere with a fumble recovery (from a Jeremy Shockey fumble, always love that), two interceptions, two tackles and an assist. Dude you rock and Reed Doughty, you better watch out.

Malcolm Kelly debuted today and made his first NFL catch, a six yard slant on third and five in the first quarter (op. cit.).

The Redskins 82 yard drive for a touchdown in the fourth quarter was actually a 94 yard drive after the 12 yard sack of Jason Campbell by Will Smith. That was good football.

As predicted, the running game went left more than right, 16 runs for 109 yards to the left and 12 runs for 39 yards up the middle or to the right (op. cit.). Stephon Heyer gets another week to get used to playing every down at right tackle, he will be called on to be a better run blocker to the right and soon, starting in two games on the road against the Cowboys.

According to the Jasons at the WaPo, it is Jason Campbell's responsibility to make pass protection calls and adjustments and that this is the first time Jason has had to do this in an offense (ibid.). It is then good and reassuring that offensive line coach Joe Bugel has given co responsibility for this duty to center Casey Rabach.

Reggie Bush is not looking at this point in his career like an every down feature back, what he is looking like is Brian Westbrook. Reggie's punt return for a touchdown in the third quarter was as much about Durant Brooks' terrible punt as it was about Reggie's great run

Zorn Lover:

Shooter:

Coltrolled: even though third string rookie quarterback Colt Brennan was inactive again he cooled off like a starter under the Z Shades that were held up on the sidelines by poor suffering bastard Redskins employees, the team could not set the Z Shades up with the verticals unless they provided the same thing to the visitors and with those poor New Orleans bastards in black there was no way the home team was going to give the visitors any help. Pity the underpaid team employee fools that had to stand there and hold the shades for three hours over the rich athletes.
