I Did Not Like These

Ok you did it now let it go a while

In 2005 the Redskins came out with the white jerseys and white pants for game twelve (sorry, no Curly R back then) at home against the the Rams, a look Washington had not sported since 2003 when they did it three times, starting with the big 16-13 win in the Thursday night season opener against the Jets.

The Redskins won that game against the Rams, then went on to beat the Cardinals, the Cowboys, the Giants and the Eagles to make the playoffs at 10-6, all with the white on white uniform combination. The luck and the white on white held in the playoffs on the road against the Buccaneers but did not hold the following week at the Seahawks.

Into 2006 and hoping to keep the good fortune alive, the Redskins wore white on white to start the season, through the game nine loss against at the Eagles, the day Mark Brunell was benched, then stayed another week in white on white in the game ten loss at the Buccaneers. For game eleven at home against the Panthers and the rest of the season, the Redskins wore white jerseys on burgundy pants. Perhaps the transition to Jason Campbell triggered this change?

Washington did not go with the white on white at all in 2007, Joe Gibbs deciding to go with the white jerseys on burgundy pants for every game possible.

Into 2008 and Jim Zorn the Redskins broke out the white on white at home in game two win against the Saints, kept it up at home for the game three win against the Cardinals, at home in the game six loss to the Rams, at home in game seven in the win against the Browns, on the road in game eight in the win over the Lions before going with the burgundy on burgundy in game nine against the Steelers.

Variously over time the Redskins have worn different uniform combinations as the standard, notably burgundy jerseys and white pants in 2001 under Marty Schottenheimer. And of course it is the judgment of the team as to what to wear.

That said the Redskins have a tradition of white jerseys, and I really don't care about the pants as long as the preferred jerseys are white. Yes this tradition may be directly related to Joe Gibbs and Jim Zorn and Dan Snyder want to move the team on, I get that. Even though it is not the jersey color most fans including me prefer to wear, that being burgundy, most fans I know associate the Redskins winning tradition on the field with white jerseys.

Add to this that the Redskins are in the minority of teams that prefer to wear white at home, meaning not only do the Redskins wear their preferred color at home, they also get to wear it on the road, that certainly makes the fans happy.

Think about it, with the Cowboys and Eagles preferring white at home and forcing the Redskins to wear colors, over the past decade don't you associate the colored jerseys with the Redskins losing?

The burgundy pants just make an unlucky look even unluckier, expecially now that the Redskins' record in burgundy on burgundy is wins zero, ass whoopings one. Don't do that again team.

It is perhaps worth noting that back in August Matt Terl at the ORB (Official Redskins Blog) interviewed Redskins equipment Brad Berlin who indicated the team planned to wear white at home through game nine against the Steelers, then burgundy at home for the rest of the season. I was not a fan of that plan then and specifically mentioned that the burgundy on burgundy would be a bad idea.
