The Hapless Left

When Jason gets sacked the terrorists win

The Redskins are leaving undrafted rookie Stephon Heyer in at left tackle and conscripted reserve Mike Pucillo at left guard despite a lackluster performance in the first two games.

In fairness I don't know where they would go as much as I would be more concerned that there are no other options no depth this is it the depth we have. Chris Samuels is still looking at no preseason play and Todd Wade has some mystery injury that saved him from not playing left guard well on Saturday.

Anecdotally I thought the left line play Saturday against the Steelers was pretty weak and Dillweed seems to confirm that, giving Stephon 1 up 5 down and Mike 2 up no down for overall play. Maybe Mike is holding it together but it was he and Stephon that got tripped up by a Dick LeBeau stunt at the line and let Jason Campbell get creamed. Dillweed money shot:

What did you expect really? [Titans coach Jeff] Fisher's blitzing scheme is elementary compared to what I saw tonight. I have a new found respect for [Steelers defensive coordinator Dick] LeBeau. Zone Blitzing + Rookie LT = Injured QB. Who knew? I don't blame Heyer for not picking up on schemes that fool even veterans, but I miss Samuels already.

Recall that left guard Todd Wade is a converted left tackle who can't seem to get low enough (op. cit.) and seems less and suited for guard play, at least so it seems.

Maybe Stephon will be good and maybe Mike Pucillo can help string through until the line gets it together but damn it sucks without Derrick Dockery.

Stephon Heyer: John McDonnell / Washington Post from here.
