Training Camp Roundup 8 August 2007

Yee doagies

A take on Redskins training camp news.

6 August 2007
I saw a bunch of these guys at training camp on Monday. No one was hassling them, no one was taunting or dousing them (because there was no beer and everyone was hoarding their water). Although I am disturbed by the gradually increasing amount of violence and assholery I have seen at Redskins Stadium over the last ten years, it is still not automatic that you will get hassled at a Redskins game wearing opponents' colors. This is because Washington Redskins fans don't take football so seriously that they are willing to fight over it. I blame the rise of incidents at Redskins games on Eagles fans anyway.

I will concede that the Redskins staff may know more about the game and the team than I but I do not understand the Redskins quarterback situation. We know Jason Campbell is in charge, and there is no way we see Joe Gibbs flip-flop the starter...again. Jason will have to sustain a compound fracture for him to give way and as it is inevitable that he will, when Mark Brunell takes the field he will be booed lustily. There's just no point in putting Mark or the fans through that.

So they are hanging on to Mark, Todd Collins and Jordan Palmer. The talk is about how Jordan is eligible for the practice squad, is that to say that Casey Bramlet, or Todd Collins for that matter are not? I'm not sure of the eligibility rules there.

Anyway, I think it amounts to a waste to string this Bramlet guy along then watch him be the MVP of the World Bowl then cut him for a guy in Jordan that has the body but needs a lot of work (his passes 'misfire regularly', op. cit.). We all pretty much know Joe Gibbs won't be around long enough to turn Jordan into a Mark Rypien project (or a Cary Conklin project either!) so I think it would have been better to cut Todd Collins, make Casey number three and put Jordan on the practice squad. That way, next season the Redskins could unload Mark's salary and let the two young guys fight it out. Competition is good.

Marcus Mason looked good in the Ravens scrimmage. To the extent the Redskins don't need to keep Derrick Blaylock for depth Marcus should get a shot. Nothing wring with a little rookie spark.

Mark Brunell's future may be as a stylist because it is not as the Redskins quarterback.

Ross Tucker. Ross Tucker. Ross...Tucker...Where do I know that name? Oh I remember, Ross was originally a Redskin, backing up David Loverne at left guard in 2002. Welcome back Ross, let's hope the reason you sat out 2006 was not because you couldn't make a roster. With all the shuffle and such you will be needed this season.

??Huh?? Another running back? Will Whitticker was cut? Where have I been? Wasn't he 'getting raves' yesterday, working with the first team on 2 August, number two in the depth chart on 29 July, at the top of the guard heap 27 July and Joe Bugle did not like Will, he loved him on 17 June? It worries me slightly that the Redskins feel they can cut Will while defensive ends are tutoring offensive linemen Dee Brown? you mean this guy?

The legend of the RV grows.
