Redskins Training Camp Day Sixteen - Surgery 6

If a receiver is not there to catch a ball, was he drafted?

Monday 4 August 2008

No practice today.

Rookie second round draft pick Malcolm Kelly had surgery today and will be out at least two weeks. This is known as a shit bummer. Malcolm is the sixth Redskins player to have surgery during training camp, following DE Phillip Daniels, DE Alex Buzbee, LB HB Blades, LB Rian Wallace and DT Anthony Montgomery (ibid.).

In coach county Jim Zorn was generally happy with the team's performance in the Hall of Fame Game against the Colts. Tomorrow the coaches will install the gameplan for the preseason home opener against the Bills on Saturday (op. cit.).

Matt Terl at the ORB (Official Redskins Blog) gives an excellent behind the scenes account of how the team got field to field from Canton to Redskins Park. Not news: in three hours. News: airport screening set up at the departure point from Canton, general aviation chartered 757, departure 10 minutes after boarding, bus back to Ashburn. Fark: some staff went back in and went to start their workday at 2am Monday.

Later in the day Matt posted some notes from coach Jim Zorn's press conference. Key takeaways: Malcolm Kelly is in Birmingham having his knee examined (this means James Andrews); coach Zorn tells his quarterbacks not to stand tall in the pocket, the better to evade as needed; coach is finally comfortable with the Redskins color scheme; his QB needs to pick up the pace and assert control of the game. Later reports on Malcolm: out two weeks.

Jason La Canfora at Redskins Insider posts a video of the adventures of the WaPo reporters. Later in his first postgame take, Jason LaCa is up on Matteral Richardson (intercepted Colts QB Jared Lorenzen aka J-Load in the fourth quarter and returned it for a TD), Chris Horton and Marcus Mason. He was not up on Stephon Heyer. Jason LaCa also covers Jim Zorn's presser, Malcolm Kelly's knee tightened up while recovering from the hammy pull; coach Zorn seems a little disappointed with his rookie receivers. Longer recap of presser here, this one is pretty much the first draft of the lead piece above (op. cit.). I wish I could just blurt out whatever I wanted and then get another post out of edits. I guess I could. There's nothing really stopping me is there. Whatever. Later reports on Malcolm: out two weeks.

Tony Brown reports that it's quote loose particles unquote in Malcolm's knee. Really, like what, muons?

Rich Tandler at Real Redskins has the quick take on Malcolm's surgery and Devin Thomas hamstring: s'ok, Redskins are set, those two can come along at their own pace. And despite 98 yards on 18 carries playing through all four quarters, Rich is hating on Marcus Mason.

Mike Florio at Pro Football Talk has lolcolts (h/t ORB). Comments are hilar. Burgundy and Gold at Hogs Haven is trying to start a QB controversy, now with more Colt Brennan youtubes.

Blogger Chris Cooley is trying to start a feature where he posts the last 20 songs he listened to on his iPod, if he does I will follow it every week, Chris seriously come on Fall Out Boy? Skid Row? All that's missing is Jonas Brothers and Taylor Swift.

Redskins transactions of note

Released: safety Stuart Schweigert and linebacker Danny Verdun-Wheeler (op. cit.). Stuart was a June free agent signee last of the Oakland Raiders (where he was cut).

Signed: fullback Pete Schmitt and safety Patrick Ghee (ibid., op. cit. for both).
