The future at left guard?
Friday 1 August 2008, two days before the Hall of Fame Game
Chad Rinehart, Redskins rookie third round draft pick, is having a good camp. This pleases me for at least two reasons: 1. it means the team actually made a halfway decent draft pick out of the top two rounds, the Redskins have had a weak draft history in terms of players making the team the further down the draft line you go; 2. it means the team is actually working to rebuild the offensive line, with only Stephon Heyer as a newcomer last season, and he was undrafted at that, the team was forced to lay out draft picks and a new contract to Pete Kendall and Todd Wade is a spare part.
Chad is playing at both left tackle (Chris Samuel's spot) and left guard (Pete Kendall's spot). No reason to believe either of the starters will not have a great season, they are both over 30 and good grooming is good insurance. Bonus: Chad talks to Matt Terl.
In cornerback land after Carlos Rogers was cleared to take part in 11 on 11 drills, he lost his eligibility for the physically unable to perform (PUP) list (op. cit.). There is no choice but the 53 man active roster, or injured reserve, taking him out for the year. Byron Westbrook talks to Matt Terl, as does Justin Tryon and Matteral Richardson.
In quarterback ville coach Jim Zorn said Todd Collins will take over from Jason Campbell after one or two series (ibid. also ibid.).
In receiver estates Malcolm Kelly talks to Matt Terl.
In the quaint hamlet of offensive line Jon Jansen will be returning on Sunday to the place where he blew out his Achilles on the first play of the 2004 preseason, when Joe Gibbs returned the NFL gave the Redskins the HoF Game.
In punter province Durant Brooks talks to Matt Terl.
The list of players that are not expected to play at the Hall of Fame Game in Canton is long (op. cit.). Rich Tandler at Real Redskins has an offensive positional look and a defensive positional look.
Tom Boswell at the Washington Post has a great column about the complementary nature of Art Monk's and Darrell Green's journeys to the Hall of Fame. It's not a training camp piece, just relevant to why and where the Redskins will be playing this game. For more, see Mark Maske's good piece as well.
Rich Tandler also has a great flashback to 2002, Steve Spurrier, a win over the Colts, it's got it all.
The morning practice was short. And in continuing Hall of Fame coverage Matt Loede at Redskins Gab reminds me that the last Redskin to be inducted into the HoF was notable drunk John Riggins in 1992.
Matt Terl at the ORB (Official Redskins Blog) is going through his first training camp with the organization and says it is pretty grueling for the organization. And I missed this documentary but if I see it come back I'm going to DVR it.
Dan Dan the Sports Bog man reports the top ten sports stories of the week at the Washington Post. If you guessed eight was the number of Redskins stories in the top ten then you are tonight's big winner.
Ron Burgundy is on the road to Canton.
