Redskins Training Camp Day Eleven - A Conditioning Optional Community

Can talk his way through anything, even a fitness test

Wednesday 30 July 2008

Well well well, another day another gratuitous Colt Brennan reference. This one from Andrew Astleford at the Washington Post, never heard of him but I did hear of Andre Ware and Ty Detmer. Great profile in a bottle, and plenty of excuse to mention Colt Brennan again. Boy if I were Jason Campbell I'd be pissed. And these Hawaii fans, they are nuts.

In linebacker town, the other big injury from last season, Rocky McIntosh, had a rare media availability today, he is considered to be a little ahead of Carlos Rogers in rehab, the Redskins would be excited to have Rocky at full speed for the season opener.

In tailback grove Ladell Betts took it light today, it appears his thighs have been attracting legs and helmets. He will miss the Hall of Fame Game as a precaution. Ladell's and Clinton's absences mean more carries for my man Marcus Mason and Rock Cartwright, who is taking part in every practice play on offense and on special teams. More not good news for Eric Shelton, neck and shoulder problems, he is heading for an injury settlement (op. cit.), I hope first of all he is ok and second that he can continue his career.

In safety city LaRon Landry will not play in Sunday's game, it's his hammy (op. cit.). Pick a player and cut paste, they all have hammies.

In receiver estates the Redskins are carrying a receiver named Horace Gant (op. cit.). Not to be confused with Horace Grant, the forward from Clemson with the funny goggles.

In the quaint hamlet of offensive line Jason Fabini was back today (op. cit.) after recovering from self inflicted food poisoning.

In cornerback land Fred Smoot...could not pass and never has passed the Redskins conditioning test at the start of camp (ibid.)? With apologies to lifetime Eagles fan, season ticket holder and Curly R reader/lurker Wilbert Montgomery, he left a comment the day of this report, I just caught it. Later in the morning I read that Fred was assigned to do cardio with the quarterbacks, this is Fred's start toward passing the test, coach Jim Zorn does not a) want his QBs to be above an elevated heart rate and b) for players to think that the conditioning test is no big deal. It strikes me though that punishing your cornerback, a guy who by definition has to run on every down, by making him work out with the pampered QBs is a little like punishing me for a hangover by making my wife and kids leave the house.

After all this, the Redskins are still nearly 2 million dollars under the salary cap (op. cit.).

Is Jim Zorn going to keep six receivers or only five? One more receiver means one less player somewhere else.

Matt Terl at the ORB (Official Redskins Blog) says it is a lot quieter without the fans at practice. Football is a game to be played in front of others but only on gameday so it is ok. As further evidence that his motivation level is down he is just linking around. Douche bag Peter King is now all I<3u with Jason Campell. Sorry Pete, we didn't forget you were an asshole abot Art monk for six years.

More with the Z-Shades from Matt, Jim Zorn is, like, sum kind of geniuf. The quarterback Slip n Slide finally came out. Didn't work, note to Jim Zorn, I've got a couple of six year olds that can help with the whole how you work a Slip n Slide if you need them. And Matt finally finishes up with Marc Dress and the video production department at Redskins Park. Years ago when I was knee high to a monitor engineer I applied to the Redskins for that job, back when still dead Jack Kent Cooke was alive.

Jason LaCa at the WaPo is really all about the grub. I love a guy with the balls to eat your food and still criticize your boss. Jason LaCa and Jason Reid also get us ready for Hall of Fame Weekend with video.

Dan Dan the Sports Bog Man found a Fixed News talking head that like the Redskins. Brah-vo.

Matt Loede at Redskins Gab has a great picture of Fred Smoot not passing his conditioning test.

Redskins transactions of note

Released: tailback/fullback Eric Shelton (here and op. cit.), he has an injured neck and cannot play, he will be receiving an injury settlement, I wonder how big those are, are they tied to the severity of the injury? Are lawyers involved?

Fred Smoot, at the peak of his not passing the Redskins conditioning testness: Scott Robinson from here.
